Two of South West’s leading

water companies merge

Two of the South West’s leading spring water companies have merged in a deal that will allow greater reach and efficiency across Cornwall and Devon.

Cornwall based Cascade Springs Water Company and Plymouth based South West Water Coolers have joined forces and will trade under the name of H2O on the Go!

With all water now coming from Cascade’s own spring in Wadebridge the new company will retain South West Water Coolers’ Plymouth depot for distribution across Devon.

Cascade’s managing director, William Hiley, has become H2O on the Go’s CEO, while South West Water Coolers’ Richard Dundon and Matt Stimpson have become managing director and finance director respectively.

“While our customers already enjoy a high quality service and product, this move will allow us to give a more efficient service to our clients across Cornwall and Devon,” said William Hiley.

“By utilising the depot in Plymouth we will be able to enjoy a greater reach in to Devon meaning that more businesses and organisations can benefit from our delicious Cornish spring water.”

The company, which will have its headquarters in Wadebridge, has retained its depot in Plymouth.

Richard Dundon said: “Cascade is a company that has a great reputation and one that we’re pleased to be working alongside.

“William has a great idea of how he wants to develop the business, which fits in with us, and this merger will allow us and our new company, H2O on the Go! to achieve those aims.

“It’s a very exciting opportunity for both businesses and a great way to start the New Year.”

Worldwide launch third annual Business

Services Golf League

Players are being sought to take part in the third annual Worldwide Financial Planning Business Services Golf League.

30 members of the Cornish business community took part in 2009 with Lloyds TSB business development manager, Phil Wilkes, being crowned champion.

The final, which took place at Perranporth Golf Club, saw Phil narrowly beat the 2008 champion, Andrew Prouse from St Austell-based accountants Philips Frith on the last hole.

“There’s a lot of excitement in the business community about the start of this year’s golf league,” said event organiser and independent financial adviser at Worldwide, Matt Higham.

“I know Andrew is keen to try and win back the title, while Phil has been out practicing as much as possible.

“Since the competition launched in 2008 we’ve seen an increase in competitors each year and I’m hopeful that we can attract even more players from Cornish businesses to take part this year.”

Beginning with a group stage in March the competition progresses to knock out rounds in July and will run until September and take in most of the county’s courses.

“The league is a great way of business people getting to know and understand each other better and how we can work together more effectively, especially as the country comes out of recession,” said Matt.

Peter McGahan, Worldwide’s managing director, said: “It’s great seeing the enthusiasm Cornish companies offer for friendly competitions like this.

“I hope firms encourage more of their staff to take part this year, because there is not only the health benefits to consider, but also the potential for networking that is on offer.”

Entries for this year’s league are now being accepted. For further information please email Matt Higham at Worldwide Financial Planning on mhigham@wwfp.net or call on 01872 222422.

Builders finds secret ingredient to the perfect finish

A Wadebridge construction company working on a project in the town have discovered the secret ingredient to getting the perfect finish.

YB Builders, who have been carrying out office redecoration work at Cascade Springs Water Company, have been using water from the company’s spring to mix their plaster.

And Nick Yelland, YB Builders’ owner, has found that it is producing surprisingly good results.

“The finish that I’ve been getting from using the natural water from Cascade’s own spring has to be the best that I have ever achieved,” said Nick, who has run his business in the town for the last eight years.

“Normally we just use water from the tap, but with their own plentiful supply at hand it was much easier for me to use it.

“The plaster mixes faster and produces a smoother finish.

“In all my experience this is generally unusual and we’re going to bring it to the attention of the Federation of Master Builders.”

Cascade Springs’ managing director, William Hiley, said: “It was a real surprise when Nick said that our water made the best plaster he has ever used, but I guess it just goes to show the benefits of using a natural product with no added chemicals.”

Architects begin year with multimillion order book

A Cornish architectural practice is set for a bumper start to 2010 after building up a multimillion pound order book.

Penzance-based RLT Architects, which specialises in sustainable development, is currently working on a number of nationwide contracts with a value in the region of £20 million.

As well as developing schemes in Cornwall, the company is working on projects in Bristol, Devon, South Wales and Scotland.

“2010 is going to be an extremely busy year for us with the projects that are underway and in the pipeline,” said RLT’s director, Danny Cooper.

“It’s great that we are winning work nationally as one of our key aims is to win work outside Cornwall and bring the economic benefit back to the county.

“We’re pleased to be able to say that we’re doing that.”

Projects include a £3 million development of a site at West Street, one of the main arterial routes into Bristol.

“The West Street project is a mixed use scheme with retail and residential which will see the creation of 15 properties,” said Danny.

“With its location it’s going to be a landmark development and is just one of a number of large urban projects that we’re working on.”

RLT are also working on the redevelopment of an industrial site in Glasgow, as well as a private housing scheme in South Wales.

In order to help with the increased workload RLT has also expanded its team with the appointment of RIBA chartered architect, Christian Simmons.

Danny added: “We’ve worked with him before and he has a great understanding of us as a business and our ethos, and we know our clients will get great service from him.”

An electrical company based near Redruth is planning for expansion over the coming year after launching its own security division.

Ellis Electrical, which has its offices at Scorrier, has launched Ellis Security to offer peace of mind and support to commercial, public sector and domestic customers across Cornwall and Devon.

Specialising in intruder and fire alarms, CCTV, door access, panic alarms and retail tagging, the company has appointed security expert, Lee Phillips, as operations manager.

Ellis Security has also gained accreditation from the SSAIB, the UK certification body which offers accreditation for providers of electronic security, fire systems and guarding security services.

Ellis Security’s managing director, Grant Ellis, said: “We’re very excited about the launch of Ellis Security as we believe we can offer a high level of quality, value and service to the market place.

“It’s great that Lee has joined us as he is well respected within the industry across the South West and is incredibly knowledgeable about the systems and how they can benefit people.

“Gaining SSAIB certification was also very important to us as it means that our customers can have peace of mind knowing that all our staff are fully accredited.”

A Cornish Chiropractic practice, which has been praised for its customer service, is gearing up for the New Year after expanding its team.

Lifestyle Chiropractic, which holds clinics in Truro and Mawnan Smith, has appointed chiropractor, Ian Doble, and sports massage therapist, Jon Schofield.

Ian, who graduated in summer 2009 after gaining MChiro with merit, has joined through the Unlocking Cornish Potential (UCP) scheme, while Jon, who has been practicing for over 15 years, has recently relocated to Mawnan Smith from Devon.

Over the last three months the practice has appointed five new members of staff and is celebrating by offering free 10-minute consultations with Ian and a £10 taster massage session with Jon during February.

Doctor of Chiropractic, Amanda Hensman, who founded the clinic in 2005, said: “We’re really pleased to welcome Ian and Jon to the team.

“They both have a real understanding of the body and how it works, and are also great with the clients.”

“I’m really excited about joining Lifestyle and working with Amanda and the team,” said Ian, who is also a martial arts enthusiast with 12 years experience in TaeKwon-Do.

“I was dissatisfied with the construction industry and after experiencing Chiropractic first hand, I changed careers and have never looked back.”

National recognition for web developer

A Cornish businessman who has developed a programme to teach school pupils about website development has been recognised for his work.

Mark Grice, who runs Truro-based Redfuse Internet, has been invited to become an ambassador for the STEM project.

The national scheme aims to create opportunities to inspire young people in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

“It’s a real honour to be selected as a STEM ambassador,” said Mark, who launched Redfuse in 2009 offering web specialist programming and development.

“The Web Academy has been a great success since its launch at Penair School in Truro and it’s really inspiring to see the pupils get to grips with web development and learn so quickly.

“Hopefully through the STEM project and Web Academy I will be able to help more young people to be inspired about website design and creation.”

Mark was invited to become an ambassador by Cornwall Learning Education Business Partnership’s Kate Whetter after launching his Redfuse Web Academy.

Kate said: “I’m working with Mark on the Redfuse Web Academy and I have been extremely by his enthusiasm and commitment to pass on his knowledge to the next generation.

“He’s only just started out in business himself and to commit that much time is brilliant.

“That’s why I nominated him to become a STEM ambassador as I know more young people will be able to benefit from his support.”

After starting the Redfuse Web Academy at Penair School, Mark hopes to roll the scheme out to other schools across Cornwall during 2010.

Live webcam fitted to historic ferry crossing

An historic ferry crossing in Cornwall can now be viewed across the world thanks to mobile phone technology.

The St Mawes Ferry Company has fitted a live webcam to one of its ferries, the Duchess of Cornwall, which runs all year round between St Mawes and Falmouth.

Mounted in the Duchess’ wheelhouse the webcam uses 3G mobile technology to upload an image every 10 seconds on to the ferry’s website, http://www.kingharryscornwall.com/webcam.

Once online visitors will see a picture of the 120 year-old route looking forwards over the ferry’s foredeck.

Toby Budd, from the Ferry Company, said: ”We had already tested the technology in the summer with the ‘Cow Cam’ on our Jacks Cow when we moved it around the river.

“After the cow was sold we decided to fit the webcam to the Duchess and already it has proven very popular with people checking that the ferry is running, as well as just taking a look to see the view, stormy days are often the busiest.”

Paul Harry from Falmouthphotos.com, who installed the webcam, said: ”This has been a really fun project, normally webcams require broadband and so it took quite a bit of development to get the mobile element working.

“We are now looking at other webcams, mobile and fixed, that we can install around the river in addition to the cameras already installed at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall and on Gyllyngvase Beach.”

The new St Mawes Ferry, which was launched by Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, in 2008 and runs seven days a week on the historic ferry route which was established over 120 years ago.

Worldwide issue warning for homebuyers

to think independent

An award-winning Cornish independent financial adviser is warning homebuyers to be aware of sales tricks employed by unscrupulous estate agents wanting to make extra cash.

With the housing market beginning to come back to life after the break for Christmas and the snow, Worldwide Financial Planning want people to be on their guard.

According to Worldwide’s managing director, Peter McGahan, there has been an increase in reports of estate agents forcing potential buyers to see their mortgage adviser before being allowed to view a property.

“Whilst most estate agents stay clear of mortgage advice or make referrals to a trusted independent professional adviser, some agents have seen this as a chance to make extra money out of the sale of a property,” said Peter.

“The tip of the iceberg for us came when our mortgage manager, who won FT Mortgage Adviser of the Year, was frogmarched in front of an adviser when he was buying a home to check he could afford it!

“If it’s happening to him then we’re concerned about how many people it’s affecting across the country and how much it’s costing them.”

In order to be aware Mr McGahan wants people to check the agent’s independence for mortgage advice and for life insurance and pension products.

“If they say no to any of these points then you should just walk away,” said Mr McGahan.

“We’ve found a number partner with selected providers, or even just one to ensure they get a bigger commission and revenue stream.

“But as well as giving more money to the agent, it can also cost house buyers in the long run.

“We carried out a mystery shopper test and found that buying life insurance from Friends Provident through an estate agent gave £28,876 less cover than if you’d bought the cover from an independent financial adviser.

“People really need to be aware as buying a home is one of the most stressful things you can go through so before you take advice or packages from an estate agent, stop and think and get a comparison from an independent adviser.”
